May Is Being Observed As Senior Citizen Month : Public welfare in North Caro lina is participating in the ob servance of May as Senior Citi zens Month by calling attention to the needs of older persons and services available to them, said State Commissioner of Pub lic Welfare R. Eugene Brown. By proclamation, President Lyndon B. Johnson has desig nated this month as Senior Citi zens Month. He has urged Fede ral, State and local govern ments; as well as private and voluntary organizations, to join in community effort to give meaning to the theme of the special month: “A New Day For The Older American”. ' Commissioned Brown pointed out that public welfare has broadened its medical services program for the aged. All per sons eligible for old age assist ance may receive medical ser vices. Persons who are not eli gible for welfare money pay ments may be able to receive Brown Letter (continued from page six) Carolina Conference at Dur ham, in 1908, was a member of the Boone church when he was a student at Appalachian. If he was then he, 1 and Lawrence Barden, who joined our Con ference in 1953, are three who have gone into the ministry from that church. It is possible there might be another or two of whom I have no account My work has taken me into various parts of this Confer ence but always there was something special about Boone and the Methodist church that had a big place in my heart and mind. The church there gave me my first chance to try my limited powers and stood by me during those years. Not many of the original members are now on the earth, and I sometimes feel as if I were among strangers when 1 wor ship there. But it is a thrilling experience to see all those children and young people thronging the services to wor ship under the leadership of a young and able pastor and preacher. There is great hope for the church’s future as long as many seek guidance toward satisfying Christian experienc es and interest themselves in fruitful fields of service. O. Know The Weather fil Hi. II. SIMS Can one foretell anything about the weather by carefully noticing the color of the clouds above? The answer is that only very limited weather information can be detected from observation of cloud colors. The truth is, in fact, clouds have no color. It may be hard to believe but clouds are colorless. Their apparent color results from reflection. The particles of moisture in a cloud reflect so much light at so many angles, tney give a wnue appearance. Take away the sun, and clouds become darker objects on the earth below, too. Little can be learned from watching the apparent color changes in clouds. Dark clouds on bright sunny days in sum mer do indicate a concentration of moisture so heavy as to blot out the light of the sun, and may indicate rain. But other color hues may mean only that certain clouds are at the mo ment reflecting colors from be low, on the earth. GREENSBORO GIRL IS CHILD OF HOPE—Five-year-old Nancy Webster of Greensboro has been selected as 1966 “Child of Hope” for the North Carolina Chapter of The Arthritis Foundation. Nancy’s selection is announced by Mrs. W. Kerr Scott, honorary chairman of the Chapter. Nancy is no victim of arthritis. She symbolizes the hope that by the time she is an adult arthritis will be no threat to her generation. The Arthritis Foundation, whose work she will represent, seeks through a national program of research to find the cause of and cure for arthritis.
